PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Dear PMAH Members,
July in Hawai'i brings an air of celebration and reflection as we honor both U.S. Independence Day and Philippine Republic Day (also known as Philippine American Friendship Day) on the Fourth of July. These occasions remind us of the shared history and enduring bonds between our nations, fostering a spirit of unity and collaboration that strengthens our community. It's a time to appreciate the diverse cultures that define us and to acknowledge the contributions of both Filipino and American heritage to our shared identity.
We recently celebrated a significant legislative victory with the passage of Senate Bill 1035—a testament to the robust advocacy of our medical community. Through collective efforts, including testimony from our board and members, personal appearances at the legislature, and support rallied through social media and word of mouth, we've achieved a landmark success. This legislation, which exempts certain medical services from the General Excise Tax (GET), will take effect on January 1, 2026, saving our health industry an estimated $74 million annually. This is a major step towards reducing the financial strain on healthcare providers and enhancing the accessibility of medical services across our state. It highlights our commitment to ensuring that quality healthcare remains accessible and affordable for all residents of Hawai'i.
In May, we held the "Spring into Health" Fair at the Filipino Community Center, providing a prime opportunity for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to engage in health awareness through preventive screenings, educational activities, and insightful discussions on local and state health services. It was a chance for our community to gather, learn, and inspire one another towards healthier lifestyles and proactive healthcare management. The fair was not just about medical screenings; it was about building a community that values health and wellness. The participation of local health organizations, volunteers, and our members was instrumental in making this event a success, showcasing our collective dedication to improving public health.
Following the health fair, we gathered for the CME event at the Four Seasons Resort Ko Olina over Memorial Day weekend. This event offered a comprehensive exploration of current medical challenges and innovations, from disease prevention to health disparities and end-of-life care. Set against Ko Olina's tranquil backdrop, it provided both professional growth and a moment to recharge in the company of colleagues. The sessions were enriching, covering a wide range of topics relevant to today's healthcare landscape. Networking opportunities allowed us to share knowledge and experiences, fostering a collaborative environment that will undoubtedly benefit our practice and our patients. As we move forward, let’s also recognize the importance of our continuous learning and adaptation. The healthcare field is ever-evolving, and our commitment to staying informed and educated is crucial. Our proactive approach to professional development ensures that we can provide the best care possible to our community.
July is a month of celebration and reflection for us. Let us use this time to deepen our impact and continue our mission to improve health and well-being across our community. Thank you for your dedication and active participation in these important initiatives. Together, we can achieve remarkable things and continue to uphold the values that define the Philippine Medical Association of Hawaii.
Warm regards,
Rainier Dennis D. Bautista, MD
President, Philippine Medical Association of Hawaii

A MESSAGE FROM OUR AFFILIATES
Aloha from BCWW,
The Lanakila Easy Access ProjeCt or LEAP has referred at least 163 newly-arrived immigrants to BCWW providers since January of this year. This a far cry from pre-pandemic levels when 314 patients where referred by LEAP during the same period in 2019. For those of who you who see or have seen uninsured immigrants, BCWW will be more than willing to give you a small honorarium to compensate you for the invaluable service you have rendered to these uninsured immigrants.
BCWW is currently involved with Tulayan Transport, a non-profit organization comprised of pre-med students that volunteer transportation services to patients of BCWW providers who need a ride to their doctors' appointments. To avail of their services, please contact Andrew Mettias at tulayantransport@gmail.com.
We are currently looking for a volunteer dentist in the Leeward Oahu area and are seeking to expand to the island of Maui so if you or anyone you know would like to become a BCWW volunteer, please contact JP Orias at jporias808@aol.com.
Lastly, we are in the planning stages of the next Doctor's-on-Stage concert fundraiser. If you or anyone you know would like to volunteer their singing, acting and dancing skills, please do not hesitate to contact JP as well.
Thank you so much for your service to the underserved immigrant community in the State of Hawaii!
Sincerely,
Jay Flores, DPT

The Philippine Pre-Medical Association of Hawaiʻi (PPMAH) is a group of dedicated and driven Filipino pre-medical students who share the common goal of one day becoming future physicians who will care for our communities. PPMAH is advised by the PMAH Foundation physicians (Dr. Hazel Abinsay, Dr. Emilio Ganitano, Dr. Marel Ver, Dr. Mark Villarin, and Dr. Alyssandra Baniqued) and works in partnership with the Philippine Medical Association of Hawaiʻi (PMAH) to provide additional physician mentorship and community health outreach opportunities.
On Sunday, June 9th, 2024, PPMAH celebrated the end of the 2023-2024 school year with a summer fiesta picnic at Waipio Central Oahu Regional Park. During the picnic, attendees participated in Filipino activities (Patintero, Filipino Dodgeball, Sungkâ, Calamansi Relay Race, etc.) and ate delicious food from Pampanga Kitchen. Our DIY halo-halo bar was sweet, but socializing with a network of attending physicians, resident physicians, JABSOM medical students, and pre-medical students was even sweeter!
As we look forward to the future, we invite you to stay up to date on our upcoming events by following us on Instagram (@ppmah.premed). We are excited to continue our journey with your support. Thank you for being a part of our community!

President's Corner
Dear PMAH Family,
As my term as president comes to a close, I would like to first off thank my family for their support, patience and love while I have been busy with so many of my duties over the last few years. Above all things, you are everything to me, Shane, Joey, Aiden and Ayla. You are and always will be my why. I love you.
It has been such a pleasure and honor to serve as PMAH President over the last two years. Our organization is so full of talent, passion, experience, caring, and commitment. It is impossible not to be inspired by each and every one of you. From the greenest premed student, to the most veteran attending physician, you have all made such an impact on me personally and as a physician. PMAH is so very special, and I hope you all get to experience it not just as a professional organization, but as the family it truly is and was created to be so many years ago at inception.
As a child, I grew up in PMAH, surrounded by all my aunties and uncles who were the founders of this organization. It is a testament to our Filipino culture that through all these many years, the core of this organization has remained one of family. One I am truly so very proud to belong to. Thank you again for the opportunity to serve.
Speaking of service, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to the hard working and dedicated PMAH Board of Governors. There is no group I would have rather have stood in the trenches of a pandemic with than you. Together, we rallied, shored things up, and created a stronger foundation to ensure that PMAH would survive even the most daunting of times. You are warriors, and I am proud to have stood with and beside you for near the last decade. Thank you for your service to our organization.
Finally, I would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to our next president, Dr. Rainier Bautista. I am looking forward to cheering you on as you take the reigns. Thank goodness. I’m tired, LOL!
With humble thanks,
Lyla Cachola Prather, MD
PMAH President, 2022/2023

Ola Pono Ike Gala, Hilton Hawaiian Village
October 14, 2023
“Since 1856, the Hawaii Medical Association has supported and celebrated the incredible work of Hawaii’s physicians in our community. For over two decades we have held the annual Ola Pono Ike Gala, a way for physicians to honor their community and raise money for worthy causes.
This year’s Ola Pono Ike Gala Dinner is scheduled for Saturday, October 14, 2023 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. It's a night when we celebrate the medical profession, and we take a moment to honor colleagues for their exceptional work. This year, we recognize two stalwarts in our community:
Dr. S. Kalani Brady, recipient of the HMA Physician of the Year Award;
Dr. Jerris Hedges, recipient of the HMA President's Award.
For the first time, we are also honoring a non-physician at Ola Pono Ike. We will present Representative Mark Nakashima with the inaugural Manawale'a Award, which is given to a non-HMA member for outstanding community service.”
Bayanihan Gala, Hilton Hawaiian Village
October 14, 2023
“For 21 years The Filipino Community Center (FilCom) has celebrated extraordinary individuals or groups for their selfless work in the community at our annual Bayanihan Gala. The Bayanihan Gala highlights the efforts of these individuals and groups while also fulfilling our mission to preserve and perpetuate Filipino customs and culture. This year we will share the fruits of our labor with performances by participants of our programs and partners.
We encourage you to support our honorees and FilCom Center at this year's Bayanihan Gala. Your support will give us the chance to envision a positive future with a great approach to our mission.
If you cannot be a sponsor, we hope you’ll consider showing your aloha to FilCom by making a donation by mailing us a check payable to the “Filipino Community Center” to: 94-428 Mokuola Street, Suite 302, Waipahu, HI 96797. For more sponsorship information, e-mail Shelly C. at events@filcom.org.”

September/October 2023 Newsletter: Maui Relief Updates from Dr Ignacio, Diabetes symposium wrap up, upcoming events and new opportunities.
President's Corner
Aloha, PMAH family! It has been a very busy Q3, culminating in our Labor Day Weekend Diabetes Symposium at The Kahala Resort. Thank you to our sponsors, attendees, and Q3 CME Chairs Drs Rainier and Rhea Bautista for making this another successful event for our organization.
Sincere thanks to PMAH member, Dr Elizabeth Ignacio, a Radiologist on Maui and current Vice President of the Hawaii Medical Association for keeping us updated on Maui wildfire relief efforts. Dr Ignacio, who will be inducted as HMA President in a few weeks, has been attending weekly support meetings to help coordinate care on the ground in Maui. She reported that in these early days and weeks, the Filipino medical and religious communities have shown up in force to continue to provide displaced residents with medical as well as culturally sensitive care and support. Filipinos represent between 30-40% of the current West Maui population. Lahaina was not only an early seat of Hawaiian government, but due to the plantation industry, represented a major hub for the immigration and establishment of Filipinos in the Hawaiian Islands.
WATCH HMA's Update on Lahaina Healthcare Efforts (Sept 22, 2023)
PMAH has been working alongside organizations including HMA, DOH, Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HIEMA) and the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii (FCCH) to develop a multi-arm plan to help provide financial, community and medical support to the people and providers of West Maui. Along with basic primary care, a significant need for psychological support remains unmet. Help is and will continue to be needed for many months to come. If you would like to volunteer, links to sign up are below.

President's Corner
Dear PMAH members and friends,
Overnight, the Maui landscape has been razed and changed forever. The Lahaina we knew, from the storefronts to the banyan tree is now mere ash and memories. These brushfires are the largest and most costly disaster that our islands have experienced, eclipsing the losses that were caused by hurricane Iniki in 1992.
Many of us have deep roots in Maui and/or have family and friends currently living through the devastation. The first of my relatives to immigrate from the Philippines settled on Maui, and later petitioned so others could immigrate to Hawaii. I reached out to my Maui contacts and Maui Disaster Response and Recovery to offer our organization’s assistance in the areas of medical relief, outreach and rebuilding. Coordinators will pair us with various organizations based on need. Additionally, the PMAH Board of Governors will be meeting soon to create our action plan.
If you’d like to volunteer with PMAH, please fill out this google form. We will prepare a list for when we are called to serve: MAUI RELIEF VOLUNTEER FORM. Big salamat to President-Elect Dr. Rainier Bautista for creating this tracker and spearheading our efforts, along with our Executive Director, Dr. Rhea Bautista.

May/June 2023
May/June Newsletter
President's Corner
In addition to Mother’s Day food and libations, end of school celebrations, and back to back graduations, May was full of prep for the annual Memorial Weekend CME and the amazing Gatsby Gala afterwards – so this newsletter is coming to you as a special May/June edition!
Memorial weekend CME & Gatsby Gala were the culmination of months of hard work by the CME team. Big Mahalo to Dr’s Kahea Rivera, Melissa Natavio, Noelani Hobbs, Marel Ver and Rhea Bautista (plus me too!) for putting on yet another inspirational, educational, and recreational weekend for PMAH members and friends. Looking forward to having many of you join us again next Memorial Weekend 2024 at the Four Seasons Ko’Olina. If you’d like to join us to help plan, produce, and fundraise for this event, pleased do! Email us at PMAHinfo@gmail.com and let us know you’d like to be part of the team.
Some of this year’s CME topics spoke to the themes of May as Mental Health Awareness Month, and June as Pride, Alzheimer’s and Brain Health Awareness Month, most notably those on sex education and identity awareness in children and young adults, ADHD across the lifespan, and brain mapping and therapy with trans-magnetic stimulation for many conditions including depression, anxiety, long-covid brain fog, dementia, and traumatic brain injury/concussions. It is exciting to see medicine continue to evolve as new therapies for conditions like these continue to develop and offer patients new treatment options in addition to traditional therapies. In addition, it is heartening to see society move to becoming more inclusive and more willing to adopt, accept and integrate people’s chosen identities. In our island cultures, there has always existed a third gender, mahu in Hawaii or bakla in the Philippines. This inclusiveness and awareness helps foster and support the mental health of the community as a whole, in a time where it is so important to be more accepting of our differences. It is our ability to do this that ultimately makes us stronger as a society.
Wishing you all an amazing summer, and looking forward to our 3rd Annual Labor Day Weekend Mini-CME, a Diabetes Symposium, at the Kahala on September 3rd!
Aloha and salamat!

April Newsletter featuring Dr J Gary Dela Cruz and Autism Awareness Month
President's Corner
Aloha PMAH members!
First a plug for the Memorial Weekend CME! Rooms are limited and the deadline to book them is this Friday, May 5th. Please go to our website at PMAH-hawaii.org to register for the CME and receive our booking code via email once your registration is complete. Contact our Executive Director, Dr. Rhea Bautista, if you have any questions.
Now on to the topic at hand! -- April is Autism Awareness Month. Thank you to Dr. Gary Dela Cruz for your writeup on autism from a pediatrician’s standpoint. As a mother to a child on the autistic spectrum, I remember what it was like being on the other side of the curtain when we received our child’s diagnosis. I went through all the stages of grief, from disbelief, to bargaining, to anger -- all of it, and it was overwhelming as a young, first-time mom. There were so many unknowns ahead of us, as well as guilt of what I could have possibly done to cause or avoid this during pregnancy and early childhood. As a mother, there is so much self-blame that it becomes the albatross around your neck, constantly weighing you down. I can’t really describe the overwhelmingly intense hurt and pain in my heart seeing my child try to make friends and getting rejected or made fun of, and more often than not, left out. There were days that were soul-crushing, where I would cry myself to sleep under a mountain of sadness for my sweet, tenacious, smart, dependable, kind-hearted child. There was also a determination to find answers and programs to help us navigate our way through childhood and adolescence to find the gifts and uniqueness and joy involved in raising a neurodivergent child. One of his gifts was not realizing that he was actually that different from everyone else. This led him to fearlessly try new things, and never feeling limited by the fear that I as his mother had for him. This fearlessness led to becoming an honor roll student, being voted onto the homecoming court, playing on a state championship football team complete with championship ring as his reward, being voted Prom King, and always being able to see the good things in life, people and situations, that I as a mom couldn’t always see. He sees the world as limitless, in a way that teaches me and others to do the same. My wish is that others would be able to see those on the spectrum or those with other forms of neurodivergence as limitless as well. After all, we are actually more alike than different from one another in the end.
See you at the CME!

Understanding Autism
Most infants and young children love to be held and cuddled. This helps them form close bonds with their parents and other caregivers. But children with autism may resist being touched. And they may often seem remote and withdrawn. Some may never learn to talk. There is no cure for autism. But many children with the disorder can be helped with intensive treatment.
What is autism?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a range of disorders in which a child's brain does not develop normally. Autism or autistic disorder is the most severe form of ASD. Symptoms often appear before age 3 and stay throughout the child’s lifetime. These symptoms can vary widely and may be mild or severe. Most people with autism have trouble talking and relating to others. They often are in a world of their own. Some children with the disorder may not respond to smiles or eye contact. They also may repeat certain actions over and over. They may follow rigid routines or be obsessed with parts of objects. A few may even try to harm themselves or others.
Who does it affect?
Boys are 4 times more likely to have autism than girls. Autism crosses all ethnic, economic, and social lines. Any child can develop this disorder.
What causes it?
Parents of children with autism often blame themselves. But autism is no one's fault. Certain genes may affect the way your child's brain develops. Other factors, such as viruses or chemicals, may also play a role.
What can help?
Early assessment and intervention are crucial for children with autism because children learn best when they are very young. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a formal autism screening for all children at the 18 and 24-month well child visits. This screen is in addition to regular developmental checks. This helps identify children with behavioral and developmental challenges as early as possible. With early intervention, special therapists can help your child learn social and language skills. School programs can be tailored to your child's needs. As your child gets older, many caring professionals can help. Talking to your healthcare provider is a good place to start.
Signs of autism
Each person with autism is unique. Some children with autism may:
Be slow in learning to talk or not learn to talk at all
Want to be alone rather than with others
Not share and play the way other children do
Be sensitive to sounds, touch, smells, or tastes
Throw tantrums or try to harm themselves or others

March 2023
March Newsletter featuring Dr Valerie Tan, Nephrologist, March for Kidneys and SB1035 testimony.
March for Kidneys
March marks National Kidney month, and with the first quarter of the year at it’s end, let’s take a moment to revisit Chronic Kidney Disease or CKD.
Our kidneys are composed of 1 million nephrons and the kidneys reach adult function at age 2-3 years old, peaking at the third decade at 120 ml/min/1.73 m2 and then declines at 1 ml/min/1.73 m2 every year after age 40.
CKD is a condition of having decreased kidney function for at least 3 months associated with evidence of kidney damage. CKD ranges from mild (CKD stage 1-2) to moderate (CKD stage 3a-3b) to severe (CKD stage 4), to kidney failure or End Stage Renal Disease (CKD stage 5). According to the CDC, 37 million people or more than 1 in 7 adults are estimated to have CKD, and of those with CKD, as many as 9 in 10 don’t know they have it. About 38% of those aged 65 and older have CKD.
CKD increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and early death. It’s the 10th leading cause of death in the US. Diabetes and hypertension remain the most common causes of CKD, with as much as 1 in 3 adults with diabetes and 1 in 5 adults with hypertension having CKD.
CKD is generally a progressive disease. The rate of progression depends on age, the underlying cause, the individual patient’s lifestyle and characteristics, control of diabetes, hypertension and other comorbidities, as well as the implementation and success of secondary preventive measures. A healthy lifestyle, a low salt diet, control of diabetes and hypertension may curb CKD, and when detected in early stages, early implementation of medications such as ACEi/ARBs, SGLT2 inhibitors and MRAs may help preserve renal function and slow down renal decline.

President's Corner
Aloha PMAH members,
(TIME-SENSITIVE - CALL TO ACTION!)
A very important bill is moving through the legislature right now. SB 1035 is a bill to exempt community private practice clinics from Hawaii state GE tax for Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare medical services. This bill is awaiting scheduling to be heard by the House Finance Committee. Rep Kyle Yamashita, finance committee chair, must put it on the dockett by Tuesday 4/4 or it will not move forward.
PLEASE reach out to your house representatives ASAP to encourage Rep. Yamashita to schedule SB1035 for hearing, or contact him yourself at repyamashita@capitol.hawaii.gov and 808.586.6330.
Spread the word to colleagues, family and friends who care about Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare patients in Hawaii.
PMAH, along with HMA and various other medical professional organizations are working together to support this legislation, but we need your involvement. Dr. Jerald Garcia & I along with groups like HMA and AARP have been working hard to help give this bill legs and give physicians a voice in the legislature. See PMAH's testimony below, and join us in making out voices heard.
Aloha!

President's Corner
February is not only the month of Love and Mardis Gras celebrations, it is also American Heart Month. Although I see it everyday in my practice, when I was doing research for this month's newsletter, it really hit me how much we as Filipinos are impacted by heart disease.
Did you know that Filipinos are twice as likely to die of heart related problems vs the rest of the United States population? In 2022, heart disease was the leading cause of death in the Philippines. According to the national institute of aging, coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death for Filipinos, accounting for about 32% of all Filipino deaths. Among Asian populations, Filipinos have the second highest risk of developing CAD. Comorbid inflammatory states, including diabetes, metabolic syndrome, gout and smoking, as well as high prevalence of hypertension in our community are all contributing factors that increase the risk of CAD and heart related deaths in Filipinos.
With such impressive statistics, it's imporant for us as doctors to focus on controlling modifiable risk factors in ourselves as well as our patient population. These including diet, exercise, stress & sleep. Lets continue to strive to be examples of good health habits for the benefit of our patients, families and community.
Aloha!

A Message from the Affiliates
PMAH Foundation continues to be very busy supporting our students as they support each other.
Our premeds (PPMAH / PMAH Outreach) are doing MCAT study sessions together, planning networking events and workshops, and have formed mentorship PODs with our JABSOM medical students (PMSAH), led by a PMAH attending advisor.
Congratulations to UH Manoa Biology premed student Darrell Guittu in being awarded our PMAHF MCAT scholarship. Darrell is a Filipino American who volunteers at the Seafarer's medical clinic and is interested in pediatrics. The MCAT scholarship is a $1000 award that goes towards MCAT prep materials or classes.
We are always looking for physicians from all specialties to provide shadowing, clinical, and/or mentorship opportunities. If you are interested in being involved or just want to learn more, please email us at pmahmentorship@gmail.com. Visit us at https://pmah-hawaii.org/pmahf .

Aloha from BCWW! I would like to take this opportunity to thank PMAH and it's members for supporting our organization for the past two decades. BCWW has been dedicated in supporting the healthcare needs of immigrants for more than 20 years now. We also recently supported our sister organization, Ohana Medical Mission, with monetary support related to their recent trip to the Philippines. Our current thrust is a community health fair in HIlo on June 18, 2023. For providers who are interested in serving, there is a travel subsidy that is available, the amount of which the board is in the process of determining. We will also begin a print and radio marketing campaign to make the public aware of BCWW's services. Since the pandemic, our patient numbers have gone down but we hope that providers who see patients who have no health insurance send their claims to BCWW as soon as possible. Lastly, check out BCWW at the Filipino Fiesta on May 6, 2023.
I would also like to highlight a few non-profits that can help care for your uninsured patients:
Rx Outreach has a great program that will provide 90 days of free medication
Our Kupuna has volunteers to help deliver groceries, medication and household supplies (needs a referral letter from PCP to receive services)
Mahalo and Aloha!
-Jay Flores, DPT, BCWW President
Aloha! What a way to start 2023 for Ohana Medical Missions Inc. First, after a 2 year hiatus due to the COVID lockdown, we have successfully conducted our first face to face medical-surgical and optical mission in Payatas, Quezon city and Bagong Silang, Caloocan city in Metro Manila, Philippines on January 13 and January 14 respectively. Second, we had our very First Charity Ball, recently held at Hilton Hawaiian Village on February 18, 2023.
Both of these milestones would not have been possible without the participation of the medical and non-medical community who shared their time, skills and monetary contributions. Your efforts, generosity and continued support has helped OMM reach their goals.
If you are interested in joining a future Medical mission, please call (808) 518-8929 or email OhanaMM2009@gmail.com. Compassion, dedication and patience is all you need. You will definitely have a role and we are looking forward that you will have one of a kind of experience in giving back to the “ least of your brethren.”
So the next time I’ll see you, be ready to pack your bags and go with us.
Mahalo and Mabuhay!

January 2023
President's Corner:
Happy new year, Members! Hoping you are all enjoying the start of a happy and prosperous 2023!
As we approach our businesses and careers, it is important to remember to also practice self-care. The phrase “physician, heal thyself” takes on a stronger meaning when you look at the challenges to our own health, both mental and physical. Our profession is one of the most stressful ones around, and physicians are keenly at risk for burnout with sequellae including depression, anxiety, insomnia, suicide, and stress related diseases like migraines, heart attacks and strokes.
How do we care for ourselves when so much of our time is focused on caring for others? Do you see your PCP regularly? Have you even established with a PCP? Are you up to date on your labs and cancer screenings? These are questions we each should remember to ask ourselves.
Along with taking care of the physical, nurture your mental and spiritual health, too. Consider starting a new hobby, plan a trip, get a massage, take time to read, to exercise, to pray, to meditate, or to do those things that remind you that life is for living, not for always working.
Prioritizing your own well-being allows you to continue to give to others at the highest level. Your health and well-being matters, too!
Aloha and Mabuhay!

Congratulations, Governor Josh Green!
It is exciting to have a leader in office who understands a physician’s point of view. The PMAH board and legislative chair, Dr. Jerald Garcia are looking forward to working with Governor Green’s administration to bolster continued support for physicians in Hawaii.

December 2022
President's Corner:
As we get ready for the holidays and the start of a new year, I am hopeful for the promise of brighter days ahead. We have all come through an incredibly challenging 3 years since the start of the COVID 19 pandemic. I am proud of the resilience our organization and it's members and affiliates have shown in continuing to support each other while providing care and compassion to our patients and communities.
What makes us strong as an organization is not just our common sense of duty as doctors, but our special sense of family -- one that is unique to PMAH and has been carried on from founding generation to current membership. As we look toward 2023, let us continue moving forward, fostering the spirit of unity, camaraderie, fellowship, outreach, and sense of family in all that we do and to all whom we serve.
Maligayang Pasko from my family to yours, and best wishes for a happy and prosperous new year!

Congratulations, OMM!
PMAH affiliate Ohana Medical Mission was the proud recipient of a $3000 grant from the Hawaii Medical Association. Immediate Past President Dr Carolina Davide accepted the check on behalf of OMM at the HMA's annual meeting at the Pacific Club. The grant was one of three funded by proceeds from HMA's silent auction at HMA's fundraising gala this past November at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Thank you to HMA for their generous gift and continued support of PMAH, our affiliates and members.
PMAH in Action!
Community service is a family affair! The Prather and the Garcia families showed up to support their hard working PMAH parents, Dr Jerald Garcia and Dr Lyla Prather in one of the Honolulu Marathon's medical tents.
This joint collaboration between the Philippine Medical Association of Hawaii and Philippine Nurses Association of Hawaii took place on December 12th 2022, during the Marathon's 50th anniversary run. It also created an opportunity for nursing students and aspiring future doctors from the Philippine PreMedical Association of Hawaii to gain volunteer hours and experience treating sprains, dehydration, heat exhaustion and muscle cramping in real time. Strong work, team!!!
Merry Christmas from our Ohana to yours
