Purpose: The Philippine Medical Association of Hawaii (PMAH) is dedicated to supporting and educating the future physicians of Hawaii.  The 8-week PMAH Summer Mentorship Program (PMAH SMP) was created to give students an opportunity to enhance their exposure to medicine while preparing them for the medical school application process.  Important life skills such as communication and professionalism will be emphasized along the way.  Above all, we hope students will complete the program with a more comprehensive understanding of medicine, be a more confident medical school applicant, and a have developed a stronger commitment to serving the community of Hawaii. 

Participants:  Five (5) students will be chosen for this summer program. 

Eligibility: Students in college, postgraduate, or gap years are eligible.  Students who have a passion to serve the Filipino community are encouraged to apply. Filipino ancestry is not required.  Must be able to attend all sessions.  Summer classes, employment, other summer programs should not interfere with program participation. 

Program dates: June 1 – July 24. 2020

Format

Clinical Experiences (3 afternoons per week - Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday)

  • Observerships in physician offices and hospital setting.

  • Core Rotations: Internal Medicine/Family Medicine; General Surgery; Pediatrics

  • Elective Rotations: IM, Peds, or Surgical Subspecialties (ie ENT, Ortho, Cardiology, Crit Care etc)

Seminars and Workshops (Saturday mornings at Pali Momi)

Discussion of Clinical observership experiences

Set topics – Examples:

  • Careers in Medicine – Do you want to be a doctor, other options in medicine. 

  • How to apply to medical school – what do you need to do….

  • Application and creating your CV. 

  • Life cycle of a doctor Part I– from Med school to residency to young attending

  • Life cycle of a doctor Part II – Attending Life and Beyond

  • Interview Skills and Mock Interviews

  • JABSOM PBL Demo and Imi Hoola

  • Practice PBL Topic 

  • Develop public speaking skills

  • How to write a personal statement

Completion: Upon completion of the summer program, participants will be awarded $500 to be used towards fees such as MCAT testing, MCAT prep classes, and/or medical school application fees upon proof of receipt.
