Objectives:

  1. To revisit the basics of PCOS, including reviewing symptoms and diagnosis.

  2. To explore treatment options, including lifestyle changes, medication, and alternative therapy.

  3. To empower attendees to feel confident using these strategies to manage these patients effectively.

Alyssa Malley is a generalist OB/GYN working at Hawaii Pacific Health and as an Assistant Professor with Jabsom. She works very closely with the residents and medical students and is the assistant medical student clerkship director. She grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, went to University of San Diego for undergrad, and then eventually attended medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She then completed her residency with the University of Hawaii. Her professional interests include general obstetrics and gynecology, pediatric and adolescent care, and care for female athletes. Outside of work, she enjoys trail running and spending time with family and friends.

Objectives:

  1. Provide the current epidemiology of TB in Hawaii

  2. Describe common and atypical clinical presentations of TB

  3. Use case scenarios that demonstrate opportunities for improvement

Dr. Bello is an Associate Professor of Medicine at JABSOM and holds leadership roles including Associate Program Director and Interim Program Director for the UH Internal Medicine Residency Program. They completed a fellowship at Harbor UCLA and have an MS in Clinical Research from UH. Dr. Bello is the Division Chief of Infectious Diseases at UH, with a private practice in Infectious Diseases and MDVIP Primary Care. At QMC/QHS, they serve as Hospital Epidemiologist, Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control, and Chair of the Infection Prevention and Control Committee. She is also a PMAG Board Member.

Kevin Salire, MD

  3. Familiarize ourselves with current therapeutic options for lipid lowering

Kevin Salire is a first-generation Filipino-American who was born in Texas where he attended medical school at Texas Tech in El Paso and Internal Medicine residency at the University of Texas at Houston before moving to southern California where he completed his cardiology fellowship at UC Irvine. He currently works as a non-invasive cardiologist for The Queen's Health System primarily at the West Oahu campus.

Obesity: Chronic Relapsing Biologically Mediated Disease | Saturday

Objectives:

  1. Identify obesity as a medical condition and ask patients permission to address

  2. Review lifestyle medicine as a foundation

  3. Review tools such as medication and surgery to treat this condition along with lifestyle medicine

Dr. Jun is a member of the AOA National Medical Honor Society and completed their Med-Peds residency at Yale New Haven Hospital. They have been with Hawaii Permanente Medical Group since 2003, serving as the Chief of Obesity Medicine and the Medical Director for Onboarding and Acculturation. Dr. Jun is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and is a Diplomate in both Obesity Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine.

Title: Optimizing Health prior to Pregnancy - Preconception and Contraceptive Counseling for the Primary Care Provider | Sunday

Objectives:

  1. Discuss medication considerations for patients of reproductive age including safe antihypertensives, diabetic medications, and common rhuematologic treatments

  2. Review safe contraceptive options for women with hypertension, migraines, increased thrombotic risk and other common medical co-morbidities

Dr. Corrie Miller is a Maternal Fetal Medicine (or “High Risk Pregnancy”) Specialist at Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women and Children and Assistant Professor at JABSOM in the Department of OB/GYN. She was born and raised in Phoenix AZ, where she attended The University of Arizona for undergraduate studies, Midwestern College of Osteopathic Medicine for Medical School, and then completed her OB/GYN Residency at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut. She moved to Hawaii to complete her fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine in 2017, and loved exploring her Filipino roots here so much, she decided to stay. Her research interests include the microbiome in pregnancy and women’s health disparities in Hawaii.

Edward Fong, MD

Title: Is it wise to be SMART? Asthma and RSV updates. | Sunday

Objectives:

  1. To understand the principles of SMART or MART therapy and age cut-offs for use.

  2. Review of NAEPP guidelines and when referrals to Pulmonology are appropriate.

  3. Review of RSV and vaccination eligibility.

Edward W. Fong received his medical degree from the University of Hawaii-Manoa John A. Burns School of Medicine. He went on to complete both his internship and residency in the field of Pediatrics at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson, Arizona. After finishing his residency, Dr. Fong remained in Tucson to pursue a fellowship in Pediatric Pulmonology at the University of Arizona. During his fellowship, Dr. Fong was awarded a National Institute of Health K30 Clinical Research Curriculum Award. He also completed the University of Arizona Clinical Research Training Program. Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Fong joined Bay Area Pediatric Pulmonary Medical Corporation as a Pediatric Pulmonologist where he attended at California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) in San Francisco and University of California Benioff Children’s Hospital at Oakland (UCBCHO). In 2015, Dr. Fong joined Stanford University’s Division of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor. In 2016, Dr. Fong returned to Hawai‘i joining Kapi‘olani Medical Specialists and was promoted in 2020 to a rank of Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Hawai‘i-Manoa.

Title: Diagnosis and Management of Common Hand Issues and Sports-Related Injuries in Primary Care | Sunday

Objectives:

  1. The conference attendee will receive a review of the basic anatomy of the extremities and the hand in relation to each condition commonly encountered in the primay care setting.

  2. The conference attendee will be able to perform special tests to diagnose said common hand and sports-related injuries.

  3. The conference attendee will learn to treat said hand conditions and sports-related injuries in the primary care setting

Dr. Flores is the owner of Waipahu Therapy Center, LLP, an outpatient orthodic physical therapy practice with offices in Waipahu and Kalihi. He received his Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Santo Tomas and his Post-Professional Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Utica University (formerly Utica College).He is received training in the mobilization and manipulation the spine and extremities training in the schools of Stanley Paris, Brian Mulligan, Robin McKenzie, and Geoffrey Maitland. He is currently licensed in the states of Hawaii, California and Florida, but has worked in the states of Georgia and Tennessee in the past. During his spare time, he serves as president of the Bayanihan Clinic Without Walls (BCWW), a PMAH affiliate. As part of his involvement with BCWW, he has helped raise funds for the organization by performing in six Doctors-on-Stage (DOS) productions. Dr. Flores is one of three physical therapists in the family: his wife, Shirleen, and his daughter, Rachel, who received her entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Utica University as well.

Herbal Remedies: Helpful or Harmful? Understanding Common Interactions with Prescription Medications | Saturday

Objectives:

  1. Identify herbal supplements that commonly interact with prescription medications.

  2. Effectively communicate to patients the risks of using certain herbal supplements with prescribed medications and recognizing signs of potential side effects.

  3. Assess clinical evidence supporting the use of herbal supplements for specific conditions

  4. Develop a patient specific monitoring plan for individuals using herbal supplements with prescription medications, considering clinical assessments and laboratory monitoring.

Christie Nemoto earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Midwestern University College of Pharmacy in Glendale, Arizona and completed a PGY-1 pharmacy residency at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, California. She is board certified in ambulatory care pharmacy and is a certified diabetes care and education specialist. Currently, she works as a clinical ambulatory care pharmacist with the Queen's Clinically Integrated Physician Network. In this role, she is part of a team based model of care, collaborating with primary care physicians and nurse practitioners to manage medication therapy for a variety of conditions including diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, anticoagulation, and smoking cessation.

Tomiki Sempokuya, MD

From Diagnosis to Care: Comprehensive Approach to Fatty Liver Disease | Sunday

Objectives:

  1. Recognize risk factors and differentiate types of fatty liver disease.

  2. Apply appropriate diagnostic tests and imaging for evaluation.

  3. Implement evidence-based management and referral strategies.

Dr. Sempokuya is a board-certified transplant hepatologist, who graduated from the UHIMRP residency program in 2019 and completed a transplant hepatology and gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2023. He completed the Health Educator and Academic Leaders (HEAL) Track during the fellowship, and was involved in several University and Hospital committees. He also served as Editor-in-Chief for the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) Case Report Journal from 2022-2023. He returned to Queen’s Medical Center as a transplant hepatologist in July 2023, and was appointed as an assistant clinical professor.

Kazuma Nakagawa, MD, MBA, FAAN, FAHA

Title: Acute and Subacute Stroke Management | Saturday

Objectives:

  1. To lean the recent changes in the stroke management.

  2. To learn when to refer stroke patients for PFO closure

  3. To better understand the selection and timing of antithrombotic agents after ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke

Dr. Nakagawa is the Division Chief of Neurology and Professor of Medicine at University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine and also the Chief of the Neuroscience Institute at The Queen’s Medical Center to oversee the inpatient and outpatient neurology, neurosurgery and neurointerventional surgery divisions. Dr. Nakagawa obtained his medical degree from University of Florida, completed his neurology residency at the Mass General Brigham Neurology Residency Program, and completed his neurocritical care fellowship at University of California San Francisco. Dr. Nakagawa practices as a neurointensivist and stroke neurologist and is the Medical Director of Comprehensive Stroke Center at Queen’s.

Dr. Olivia Manayan is a current first-year Complex Family Planning fellow at the University of Hawaii. She was born and raised in Hawaii and is proud to call it home. She received her BA in Neuroscience at USC, her MPH at King's College London, and her MD at the University of Queensland-Ochsner Clinical School. She completed her OB/GYN residency at the University of Hawaii. Her interests and passions lie in reproductive justice, improving abortion access, health advocacy and policy, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
