Title: Beyond BMI in Hawai‘i: Metabolic Disease Risk and Early Diabetes in Southeast Asian Patients

Objectives:

• Recognize the distinct pathophysiology of metabolic disease in Southeast and East Asian populations, including increased visceral adiposity, ectopic fat deposition, and early β-cell dysfunction contributing to diabetes at lower BMI levels.
• Implement appropriate, population-specific screening strategies using lower BMI thresholds and clinical recognition of high-risk phenotypes in Hawai‘i’s Asian immigrant and descendant populations.
• Incorporate early and equitable prevention and treatment strategies into clinical practice by addressing systemic and insurance-related barriers to care and applying evidence-based interventions for metabolic disease.
